When the last sheets of ice receded about 18,000 years ago, the plants and animals that had found refuge here spread out in every direction. Over the millennia, some species were able to adapt to the harsh climate of the Yukon North Slope, including the arctic fox, tundra muskox, caribou and grizzly bear. These robust species survive to this day.

Others, such as the woolly mammoth, steppe bison, camel, badger, giant beaver and wild ass were not so fortunate. These species were simply unable to adapt to the challenges of the Yukon North Slope, and were quickly relegated to remnants of the past.
